Chair, Science Summit on Urban Water
It is a great honor for me to welcome you to attend the 5th IWA Conference of Science Summit on Urban Water during December 1-4, 2020, co-organized by Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) and International Water Association (IWA). The theme of this conference is "Future-oriented Urban Water System—Ecological, Digital and Resilient ", which focuses on future-oriented water treatment technology, resilient urban design and digital water ecology.
In recent years, the increasing number of urban population and rapid development of cities in the world have led to a growing demand for water, but at the same time, the problem of water pollution is becoming more serious. Global water shortage, ecological destruction and water crisis under multiple effects are becoming big issues. In order to cope with these problems and achieve sustainable development, the United Nations put forward the concept of "resilient city", stressing that how we manage water and fragile resource would define our success in reaching all goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In this global trend, China has made great efforts for the security of urban water environment. China has incorporated the construction of "Smart City" and "Eco-City" into the national strategic planning, and developed the future urban system with "digital water" as the core to build a resilient city with healthy water system. Moreover, in the Government Report of 2019, it is also emphasized that in the future, urban water infrastructure construction must move towards energy conservation and consumption reduction, environmental friendliness and resource recycling.
The conference aims to build a comprehensive communication platform of water technology, water design, water ecology and water elasticity, and promote green development of water treatment industry and digital resilient city in China and other countries. We are very pleased to offer this Summit and warmly welcome all of you to Guilin.

Co-executive chair, 5th Science Summit on Urban Water
On behalf of the local organizing committee, it is my great pleasure to invite you all to the 5th IWA Conference of Science Summit on Urban Water in the beautiful city of Guilin.
Facing the ageing infrastructure, increasingly scarce water resources and fragile urban design, we are forced to take innovative solutions to create water resilience for growing urban areas. Relating to the conference theme of “Future-oriented Urban Water System—Ecological, Digital and Resilient”, the proposition of "resilient and digital city" has come to the stage. Guilin is one of the most beautiful cities in China, surrounded by rocky hills with the Li River through the city, and renowned for its heritage, culture and festivals. You can visit and explore the landscapes, as well as local cuisine with mixture of Cantonese cuisine and Zhuang cuisine. “Guilin's scenery is the best among all under heaven”. I am looking forward to a fruitful conference in Guilin in December 2020.
